Lake Placid Dam July Project Summary
Date of Report: July 12, 2024
Recent Activities:
During the past month, the contractor has completed the widening and slab pour of the Bay 2 center pier. In Bay 1 the upstream spillway slab pour to an elevation of 479.50’ was completed. Also in Bay 1, epoxied dowels, rebar and stop pad anchors have been installed in the downstream spillway in preparation for slab pouring to an elevation of 479.50'. The contractor started the downstream 18" riprap installation for dam armoring. Clearing and grubbing was completed on the South embankment. The first quarter section of the Bay 1 gate (that weighs 60,000 pounds) was delivered to the site on July 12, 2024. (This is the first of four sections of the Bay 1 gate.)
Change Orders:
1. Pending Change Order: Sundt has been requested to provide pricing to add a gantry crane to the Contract. The gantry crane will allow Lake Placid to set and remove stop logs as needed to maintain the new gates. Sundt is waiting for pricing from their manufacturer.
2. Pending Change Order: Core and grout underneath existing spillway slab. Sundt is working on pricing this change order.
Schedule:
1. Sundt is continuing to evaluate ways to regain time lost from dealing with unanticipated debris discovered upstream of Bay 1.
Other Items of Interest:
1. Steel Fab gate manufacturing remains on schedule. The three (3) remaining quarter sections of the Bay 1 gate are scheduled to arrive at the site every Friday for the next three (3) consecutive Fridays (July 19, July 26, August 2).
2. The Lake Placid Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) was delivered and stored at the McQueeney site on June 22, 2024. Sundt is building a shelter to house the HPU until the project is ready to place the HPU and put it into service.
3. The hydraulic cylinder factory acceptance testing (FAT) is scheduled for middle to late July 2024. The first cylinders are being painted.
Upcoming:
In the next several weeks, we expect (1) installation of dowels, rebar, hinge anchors, stop log block outs, and formwork for concrete in Bay 1 to an elevation 483.33'; (2) continued dam armoring earthwork and concrete placements; (3) excavation and placement of rock riprap downstream of the dam armoring concrete grade beams; and (4) delivery of the three remaining quarter sections of the Bay 1 gate. (The bays at Lake Placid Dam are very wide, and in order to fabricate, ship, and enable placement, each gate at Lake Placid is made of four (4) pieces/sections. Lake McQueeney, similar to Lake Dunlap, has more narrow bays/gates and each of those gates are fabricated and shipped for placement in two (2) pieces/sections.)
Updated Substantial Completion Date: June 8, 2025
